I feel like there tends to be two different reactions to August.
1.) “Finally! I’m ready for a bit more structure and routine again this month with back-to-school/normal.”
2.) “Ugh! August, I’m not ready for you. Summer needs to last longer!”
Growing up, I was firmly in camp #1. I loved me some back-to-school. Getting to go to the store and do the back-to-school shopping=the best. Counting down the days until they released our schedules for the upcoming school year= 100% me.
This summer, I have found myself more in camp #2. I feel like I really embraced summer this year. It felt slow, it felt soft, but also weirdly busy and full. And now that the calendar is reading August… I can’t help but feel a bit of “I’m not ready.”
One thing that has shifted my attitude on this is how many in Europe embrace August. August is their month of shutting down everything… and going on holiday. They don’t seem to feel a sense of “it’s over” yet, and they also don’t seem to be in a rush to get into the back-to-school mindset just yet.
August is their epitome of summer, and it’s a shift that I am wanting to embrace this year.
Let’s allow August to be summer. And then we can welcome September with wide-open arms.
Here’s your August in five senses.
